In terms of popularity and range of choices, wooden garage doors come next to steel garage doors. However, a wooden garage door is costlier than a steel garage door. Wooden garage doors need to be painted to prevent damage caused by water. They can withstand more wear and tear than steel garage doors. Wooden garage doors also have insulation options. If you want to have a customized garage door, then a wooden one will be the best bet.
Several garage door manufactures have specialized in creating the look of carriage doors using the standard garage door format. Some manufactures use standard rolling panel construction that has a carriage door pattern designed into the garage door. Using modern materials especially steel will make this type of garage door both secure and very durable. The use of solid one piece overhead garage door construction gives the carriage garage doors an authentic look. This older style cantilever door opens outward at the bottom and rotates upward as on solid door. This method of construction works well when using an all wood door construction.
Garage area may not be used by the car alone; it works as a store for inventories & old furniture or a workshop for others. You would want a door which insulates well if there is a part of house extended above the garage. The R-value on a garage door tells how well it insulates. The higher the R-value, the better is its insulation properties. Terms like Headroom, Backroom and Sideroom become parameters to select a suitable garage door as they determine the dimensions; Headroom is the amount of space inside the garage between the top of the garage door and the ceiling. Backroom is the inside length of the garage, from front to back. Side room is the distance between the sides of the garage door and the side walls of the garage. Dimensions matter when you are installing a garage door as the hardware needs some room to operate freely.
I have been involved in numerous garage door lawsuits where many different reasons for an injury have occurred. Having been retained as expert witness for both plaintiff and defense, several common factors have been observed. In many cases, unqualified individuals have attempted to repair or install garage doors. They have lacked the knowledge, skills or even the basic required tools to perform the work safely and properly. I have been hired as an expert by garage door manufacturers and installers to defend claims that they are not responsible for alleged product defects. In most cases, the components that failed, failed as a result of abuse or improper installation on the part of the end user. As stated above, the installation of many garage doors is not appropriate for an untrained person. An exception to this relates to "do it yourself" garage door kits that are sold at local home centers. A homeowner could install the door because these kits do not come with a professional quality package of hardware that should or would require special knowledge for the installation. These kits do not typically employ torsion springs that would require special knowledge, proper tools, and working skills to install. The doors are typically for light duty use. Professional installation services are often available through a home center to assist a homeowner in need of a specialized installation. As with most trade specific tasks, years of experience working as a professional installer qualifies tradesmen for their contracting license. The average homeowner watching a few television shows that give rough explanations of how to install garage doors is not usually qualified to install his or her own door. These "how to" television shows are no substitute for the many skills acquired after working in the field.
